Writer-director Daniel Roby has fictionalized the grim story of Alain Olivier, a small-time drug dealer tricked in 1989 by Canuck police into traveling to Thailand to orchestrate a major heroin score, landing him several years in a local prison. Victor Malarek, the real-life journo who uncovered the agents' corruption, retains his identity in Roby's telling, though as played with furrowed brow and gruff virtue by Josh Hartnett, he's a movie hero through and through.
What sparks of strangeness and intrigue "Most Wanted" has emerge principally from the presence of Antoine-Olivier Pilon - the electric star of Xavier Dolan's "Mommy" in 2014 - as Olivier, here renamed Daniel Léger for purposes of creative leeway. His gangly body language and penetrating, off-kilter stare suggest a real, bewildered inner rage, not defined simply by the tabloid-ready circumstances of his victimhood. You needn't be familiar with the true story to anticipate his arc here, but Pilon makes for volatile watching all the same. When the script shifts to matters of newsroom infighting and shoe-leather reporting, Hartnett takes the lead with his usual likeable diligence, but it's hard not to feel we've drifted from the film's live wire.
It's a good 45 minutes before Pilon's and Hartnett's halves of the film intersect, exposing a staggered non-linear timeline that, while deftly engineered, doesn't yield quite the dramatic payoff you might expect. Before then, Most Wanted" introduces its leads in leisurely fashion. Malarek is established as a star print and TV newsman whose earnest commitment to truth-seeking hasn't made him many friends in high places, and a loving but inattentive husband to his wife Anna (Amanda Crew, thanklessly cast. He's lightly admonished for missing the birth of their first child to chase a scoop; beyond that, Roby's screenplay isn't much concerned with Malarek's home life either.
Léger is presented to us with more human creases and question marks. An itinerant manual laborer with a drug habit and very bad taste in companions, he has a chequered personal history that is revealed only in patches - the blank spaces turn out to be crucial, particularly when the police identify him as an ideal patsy for an entrapment operation. Falling in with brutish low-level criminal Picker (Jim Gaffigan, playing seamily and effectively against type) is a dead end that pretty much anybody but the dim, desperate Léger could see coming: Soon enough, he's sent to Thailand to do a supposedly routine deal. Cue reversal, betrayal and a stint in the infamous Bang Kwang prison - portrayed here in suitably sobering fashion, though with slightly less baroque hellishness than in 2017's "A Prayer Before Dawn, another true-life tale of a hapless westerner drawn into its violent confines.
As Malarek pursues the truth of what exactly went down - to the grave consternation of his editor (J.C. Mackenzie) who'd rather he just left the whole thing alone - viewers might arrive at it slightly ahead of him. At over two hours, Most Wanted" could stand to pick up the pace of its own investigation: Malarek's office squabbles and marital strains, in particular, are diversions that consume considerable screen time without accumulating much emotional weight. Whenever it's on Thai soil, the film moves with tightened urgency and vigor: Ronald Plante's camerawork, crisp and handsome throughout, gains in humid restlessness as it travels from the serene, misted vistas of British Columbia.
Along with Pilon's striking performance, the film's sturdy, subdued craftsmanship keeps it from movie-of-the-week territory, even as Roby's script ticks overly familiar boxes. Eloi Painchaud's score contributes subtle menace, while Yvann Thibaudeau's editing zips and darts and cross-cuts in ways that enliven passages of procedural cliché. Still, it's hard not to feel that "Most Wanted" has hedged its bets between the perspectives of two characters, when we'd rather see Olivier/Léger's story through his own naive eyes. What's that they say about journalists becoming the story.

New York can be an unforgiving city, even in the best of circumstances. Unfortunately for the awkward patchwork of characters who populate Lone Scherfig’s listless new melodrama, “ The Kindness of Strangers ” does not take place in the best of circumstances. Everyone in the film is lost and lonely in one way or another; everyone is either helpless or guilty; everyone is either about to hit bottom, or beginning to claw their way out of a hole that’s too deep to escape without some assistance. The young mother whose story provides the spine of this underdeveloped mosaic, is somehow all of those things at once. Played by a tender and compellingly frayed Zoe Kazan, Clara opens the story in the pre-dawn hours by stealing her two young sons (Jack Fulton and Finlay Wojtak-Hissong) away from their Buffalo home, and from the abusive cop husband (Esben Smed as the demonic Richard) who’s recently turned his rage towards his kids. Paranoid that Richard might be able to track them down, Clara drives towards Manhattan without a credit card or a cell phone or anything else that might be useful for someone who’s trying to start a new life. Of course, it’s not as if Richard allowed Clara to develop much of an old life. There’s a reason why she doesn’t have any friends or family to turn to in her time of need — a reason why the only person she knows in all of New York is her layabout father-in-law, and he’s not going to be much help. Clara is soon forced to sleep in her car and steal her food, the latter habit leading to the strangest development of a movie that often feels like it’s entirely comprised by inexplicable choices and chance encounters: Using whatever currency her whiteness provides, Clara nips a tray of hors d’oeuvres from a high-end cocktail party. As a result, her youngest son develops a taste for caviar, which inspires her to pinch their next meal from an opulent Russian joint she finds near Wall Street. Decorated like the Hermitage and defined by the cock-eyed humor of a Kaurismäki film, the Winter Palace isn’t just a restaurant, it’s also a respite from the indifference of the outside world. The owner (Bill Nighy) is a sweet man who’s quick to trust the fate of his business to anyone who comes in off the street, and his most recent hire — a handsome, newly released ex-con named Marc (Tahar Rahim) — seems eager to reflect his boss’ good intentions. Together, they make the joint feel like a warm hug in a cold city, and a hub of kindness in a movie where everyone could use some. And yet, the script (the first Scherfig has written solo) is entirely disinterested in the Winter Palace as a place, or in any of the various institutions that prop up a scattered plot that gets lost whenever it starts to wander between its locations. While the stilted opening act is mostly carried along by the velocity of Kazan’s desperate sense of parental duty (it’s wrenching to watch her balance her own needs with those of her children, and to wrestle with the ways in which they don’t quite overlap), it’s also sustained by the expectation that all of the characters in Scherfig’s messy ensemble are being pulled towards the enchanted restaurant where they’ll be able to redeem each other. And maybe they are, but the film never finds its center of gravity, or sees how the Winter Palace might help galvanize this story into more than the sum of its misshapen parts. While the movie works to depict how kindness breeds kindness, even in the cruelest of environments, it spends much of the time watching its motley collection of lost souls chase their own tails. Perhaps that’s because Scherfig is stepping outside of her comfort zone, and struggling to reconcile the stately European romanticism of her previous work (e. g. “An Education, ” “Their Finest”) with the hardscrabble vibe of a mercenary American milieu. Shooting with a handheld camera that harkens back to her Dogme 95, Scherfig often seems uncomfortable with her own dour locations and depressing story beats; not every New York movie needs to be shaped by the violent edges of a Safdie brothers’ film, but “The Kindness of Strangers” can’t square the direness of its characters with the underlying humanism that draws them together. Scherfig’s solution is a fable-esque logic that makes everything feel somewhat false. Case in point: Safdie favorite Caleb Landry Jones is (kind of) cast against type as Jeff, a twitchy magical idiot type who gets fired from two different jobs because he’s “bad at just about everything. ” It’s hard to tell if he’s supposed to be intellectually handicapped in some way, just as it’s hard to tell if Scherfig is playing his hopelessness for laughs; sandwiched between difficult sketches of Clara’s encroaching homelessness, we see Jeff lose an apartment because he drops his phone in the toaster, and lose a temp gig because he mistakes a fluffy dog named Beyoncé for a bed sheet and buries it under a massive pile of cloth. Arriving at a soup kitchen in need of a meal, Jeff stands on the wrong side of the counter, and gets handed an apron instead. But Scherfig is also determined to not let things get too detached from reality, and so she occasionally shortchanges the film in other areas. Kazan and Rahim are both immensely charismatic actors, but “The Kindness of Strangers” cuts off their most romantic scenes, as though stifling their chemistry might help restore the movie’s balance between misery and magic. In a narrative that hinges on acts of pure generosity, it’s also strange that Marc wants something in return for the charity he shows to Clara and her kids. It’s not quid pro quo creepiness, but his motivations are too cloudy for a movie that overcomplicates its most basic emotions. That includes Alice — a heaven-sent ER nurse played by the shapeshifting Andrea Riseborough, predictably brilliant and elusive in a role that a lesser actress might have smothered with moral virtue — who’s so pure of heart that she uses her free time to run a meeting group for people in need of forgiveness (the role of guilt is over pronounced and under-explained). While “The Kindness of Strangers” is Clara’s story, it’s Alice whose generosity holds it together, and Alice who’s self-interest threatens to pull it apart. Even the helpers need a hand of their own. “I’m nobody’s numero uno, ” Alice laments, but she never abandons her angelic nature, and her persistent goodness pulls everyone to one side or the other; it would be awful enough that Clara’s husband is an abusive cop, but Scherfig feels compelled to turn him into a psychopathic killer, and the whole movie tips over into the absurd. There’s a palpable urgency to the film’s kindness, and a real despair to the film’s inability to make us believe in it. Es ist dieser Handlungsstrang, der in The Kindness of Strangers am meisten überzeugt – großartig getragen von Zoe Kazan. Es ist auch ihm zu verdanken, dass man manche der Gags allein schon als willkommene kurze Erleichterung begrüßt, andere Pointen sind indes sehr scharf und gekonnt gesetzt. Dazu kommt eine überzeugende Kameraarbeit, die die bisweilen allzu penetrante Musik weitgehend vergessen lässt. Dabei findet Sebastian Blenkov Bilder von New York, die gleichermaßen die Intimität und die Größe dieser Stadt fassen, aber auch erkennen lassen, dass es hier nur die Hilfe vom Fremden gibt, wenn man im Elend angekommen ist. Leider wird zum Ende hin die grundlegende Botschaft, dass man doch einfach freundlicher zueinander sein sollte, allzu penetrant wiederholt und einmal sogar ausgesprochen. Das ist schade, gerade bei einem Film, der so wundervolle Bilder für die Einsamkeit findet – insbesondere von Alice, die von Andrea Riseborough mit so viel Stärke und Kühle gespielt wird. Hier hätte sich Lone Scherfig, die ja auch das Drehbuch geschrieben hat, noch mehr auf die Stärke ihrer Inszenierung verlassen können. When I first watched the film, I thought the pacing was way too quick for me to actually understand what was going on. Although I will say that the fire fighter scenes were pretty intense regardless if they were only training or had to attend buildings that were on fire due to fireworks.
I understood this films backdrop involving the feeling of losing someone through drowning and honestly the ending was a near hard hitter for me. However I would have liked if the couples experience together was more in depth because as I said yet again, it was rather rushed. It didn't give much in depth either with the other guy who had a crush on her or if he was going for someone else. Since I'm not gonna say spoilers to telling you who's who, it's best to watch the film.
Animation wise, it was pretty alright. Not amazeballs but it was easy on the eyes at least.
As much as the film did offer a bit of emotion, it's not the ultimate worse or disappointment I've ever seen. However room for improvement is what it definitely definitely needs in terms of story pace development.

His new project will be a full-length feature movie and will tell an original story about a female surfer and a male firefighter. This love story is called Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara (If I could ride a wave with you). It is scheduled to come out at the beginning of Summer 2019. At the event, they unveiled the first visual! Yuasa said about the movie, ‘It is not a continuation of Lu Over the Wall but it is connected to the story. ’ He confirmed that the love story he couldn’t put into Lu will be told here. He has told love stories before in Mind Game and The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl, but both had strong flavors of the original stories they were based on. The host of the event asked, ‘Will you let it end with a straight love story? ’ to which Yuasa answered with confidence, ‘Since I’m the one telling the story, it might be something a bit different. The beginning of the story will be surprising’. The heroine of this story is Hinako Mukaimizu, a girl of 19 years who loves surfing and is attending university. The hero is a 21-year-old firefighter Minato Hinageshi. Hinako is a bright, expressive girl, but when it comes to her future, she doesn’t have much confidence. Minato has a strong sense of justice and trusts in the importance of his work. He looks as if he can do anything with little effort, but in reality he works hard for it. The movie will be told with the feelings of ‘if she could ride a wave with him’ for Hinako, who is good at surfing but doesn’t have enough confidence, while for the firefighter Minato it will be ‘if he could help her ride a wave’. The voice cast hasn’t been decided yet. Yuasa left a comment on the movie’s official website: ‘In work and personal life as well, we often get the sensation as if we are “riding a wave”. Sometimes it means you are in “good form”, but the waves might not be quite how you want them to be. But you go and choose a wave to ride. You adapt to it. You don’t know if the wave will take you where you wanted to go, but you will only find out after riding it. No matter how much you think about it, you have to ride the wave first to find out where it’s going. Masaaki Yuasa’s newest anime feature follows a teen surfer experiencing first love and enduring a life-changing tragedy before finally discovering her true calling. After several recent features that favored the more fantastical aspects of the genre, anime director Masaaki Yuasa returns with Ride Your Wave, a slightly more realistic teen-oriented comedic drama. Following a June debut in Japan, GKIDS will release the surfing-themed film stateside next year, ideally coordinated with the start of summer vacation, which could help build word of mouth for a title that’s rather more conventional than the acclaimed director’s best-known films. Relocating to Chiba to begin university studies in oceanography, avid surfer Hinako (Rina Kawaei) finds herself right at home in the seaside city, where she can hit the waves anytime after just a short bike ride down to the beach. Her route happens to pass by the neighborhood firehouse, where she catches the eye of young firefighter trainee Minato (Ryota Katayose). Clearly taken with the new girl in town, he tries to keep an eye on the nearest surf break for Hinako to appear. “That’s my hero, ” he sighs, gazing at her carving waves offshore from the apartment he shares with co-worker Wasabi (Kentaro Ito). Hinako needs her own hero, though, when her apartment goes up in flames after some local punks set off illegal fireworks next door, bringing Minato to her rescue when the firefighters respond. Apparently too traumatized by the experience to continue her studies, she takes a job at a flower shop and begins dating Minato, who is eager to improve his surfing skills. The two remain inseparable until Minato drowns during a tragic ocean rescue attempt, sending Hinako into a deep depression. One day, however, she discovers that by singing their favorite song, she can invoke Minato’s spirit, although he will only appear immersed in water, even just a glassful if it’s nearby. Hinako quickly gets reattached to her now-insubstantial boyfriend, but her friends can’t see him at all and begin to worry about her state of mind. Yet as comforting as she might find Minato’s presence, Hinako gradually realizes that she’ll need to somehow break free if she’s going to move on with her life. Yuasa’s character designs and backgrounds are fairly realistic by the standards of his earlier films, many populated by oddball humans and fantastical creatures, like 2017’s award-winner Lu Over the Wall. This shift in style transforms Ride Your Wave into fairly standard anime fare, even if the pic’s climactic scenes are probably as ambitious as many of his other memorable set pieces. Tonally however, the film remains a bit more uneven, shifting from romantic teen drama to lighthearted fantasy as Hinako drifts further into her own world, enthralled with Minato’s spirit, even as she begins to realize that his soul may be stuck in limbo, preventing him from reaching the afterlife. Screenwriter Reiko Yoshida initially oversells the script’s girl-power theme, first depicting Hinako as a confident and competent young athlete, then cutting her adrift when she falls for Minato and almost completely loses her sense of independence. The filmmakers’ reliance on romantic situations throughout the midsection may have some older teens and adults rolling their eyes, but the final scenes over-deliver with a literal flood of action that enables Hinako to definitively prove herself and discover her true calling.
